The first day of November 1327 four children escape from Kingsbridge Cathedral to play in a forbidden forest. They are, Gwenda, daughter of a thief, Caris, an exceptional girl who wants to be a doctor and the brothers Merthin and Ralph, the first a genius with his head full of inventions and the second a tyrant, cruel and vengeful. There in the forest will be witnesses to a fight between a Knight and two soldiers. Soldiers die and the Knight buried a document before entering the monastery of Kingsbridge to become monk the rest of his life.

The contents of this secret document will play an important role in various moments of the novel. As adults the lives of these four kids will be interlaced by ambition, love, hate and revenge. They will live moments of great prosperity and famine; years of war and years of plague. CARIS, is the daughter of a wool merchant. Small I wanted to be a doctor, a profession forbidden to women in the middle ages.
