We are in March 1897, but the memories of this curious individual cover throughout the 19th century. Simonini childhood takes place in Turin, with the permanent dispute between his grandfather, a monarchist conservative anti-Semitic, and his father, a revolutionary ready to fight for the most trivial causes. Soon, the young demonstrates his skills for the deception and becomes spy. Through his research will discover the more unfamiliar, even to a Garibaldi at the service of Freemasonry. Forced to leave Italy as man "who knows too much', Captain settles in Paris, and soon the French power resorts to its services so it falsifies documents and spy all Prussian manoeuvres, but also to certain influential figures of the country's politics. Help you in this task the Abate Della Piccola, a cleric extravagant, ambiguous, the alter ego of Simonini. Passing through many great episodes that marked the 19th century, Eco builds a great tribute to the era novel, the soap opera.
